Rajkumar Santoshi, who was working on the pre-production of Aamir Khan’s film Lahore 1947, had plans to begin shooting soon. However, he has faced a significant setback. He has been sentenced to two years in jail along with a fine of two crore rupees. Santoshi had borrowed one crore rupees. Now, the Jamnagar court has ordered him to pay double the amount as a penalty.
According to reports, businessman Ashok Lal (complainant) had loaned Rajkumar Santoshi one crore rupees for a film in 2015. To repay this loan, Santoshi issued 10 checks of 10 lakh rupees each. In December 2016, all these checks bounced. Initially, the complainant attempted to discuss the matter with the filmmaker. However, there was no response from Rajkumar Santoshi’s side. Consequently, the complainant filed a case against Santoshi.
On April 15, 2023, the Jamnagar court stated that for each bounced check, Rajkumar Santoshi would have to deposit a sum of 15 thousand rupees. That amounts to a total of 1.5 lakh rupees. During this period, summonses were issued in his name, but he did not respond to any of them. Eventually, he did respond to the summons, but did not appear in court. Subsequently, a bail warrant was issued against him. Following that, he appeared in court.
On February 17th, the Jamnagar court sentenced Rajkumar Santoshi to a two-year jail term and ordered him to pay double the amount of the loan taken from Ashok Lal. Until the news was reported, Santoshi had not obtained bail. This isn’t the first time Santoshi has faced such legal issues; in 2022, a Delhi district court also issued a non-bailable warrant against him.
Speaking of his films, Santoshi was working on ‘Lahore 1947’ for Aamir Khan’s production company. The movie features Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, and Shabana Azmi in lead roles, with recent news suggesting Abhimanyu Singh will play the villain. Aamir Khan himself is set for an extended cameo.
‘Lahore 1947’ was set to start filming soon, but due to Santoshi’s legal troubles, the project might be delayed. Despite his efforts to secure bail, legal complications could hinder the film’s progress.
